For over 15 years, John Caffery has been a leader in community development, arts-based education, and social justice initiatives in Toronto. His career bridges academic, cultural, and grassroots settings, with a consistent focus on advancing equity and empowerment for marginalized communities, particularly LGBTQ2S+ youth. As a Professor at George Brown College and Centennial College, John has taught and designed curriculum in Human Rights, Community Engagement, and Campaign Organizing, while mentoring emerging community workers and artists to develop practical, inclusive approaches to social change. His previous leadership roles with organizations such as Supporting Our Youth (SOY) and the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation highlight his commitment to creating accessible, affirming spaces for youth, artists, and people living in poverty.
John’s professional practice also extends to large-scale community engagement and research initiatives. He has curated major public programs for Pride Toronto, Harbourfront Centre, and Nuit Blanche at Centennial College, fostering collaboration across education, art, and civic engagement. As Principal Investigator for a research partnership between Centennial College and the City of Toronto, John led the development of culturally relevant emergency preparedness materials designed to enhance community resilience in the face of climate-related emergencies. Through this and other projects—such as the ongoing Hall of Justice community research initiative—John continues to integrate education, creativity, and social advocacy to strengthen inclusive, sustainable communities.
